Are different brands of computer monitors interchangeable with computer towers?

I have a Dell computer tower and a clunky old "Samtron" monitor. I want to buy a nice HP monitor (used online) but I’m not sure if it’ll be compatible with my computer. Are the hook-ups the same across the board, for all brands?

Sorry if this is a dumb question.
It’s an HP f1905 LCD Monitor. From what I can tell online, it’s analog-compatible, whatever that means…

Thanks!

  1. Short answer: the interface is standardized.

The qualifier: If you upgrade from an old CRT like your Samtron to a new LCD, make sure the LCD supports analog input. Long as you don’t buy a very new monitor that ONLY supports DVI, you’re fine.
